.NAME Domains

Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal extension is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. Initially, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Existing third-level domains remained online.
